Classic Butter Thumbprint Cookies are delightful, buttery treats with a soft texture and a sweet burst of fruit jam in the center. Perfect for holiday celebrations or any time you want a simple, comforting cookie recipe that combines the richness of butter with the fresh flavor of raspberry, strawberry, or apricot jam.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup fruit jam (raspberry, strawberry, or apricot)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean-up.
  2. Make the Cookie Dough: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 to 3 minutes using a hand or stand mixer. Add the vanilla extract and mix until fully incorporated. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing just until the dough forms and comes together without overworking.
  3. Shape the Cookies: Roll the dough into 1-inch diameter balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet with about 2 inches of space between each ball to allow for spreading. Use your thumb or the back of a small spoon to make a shallow indentation in the center of each dough ball.
  4. Fill the Indentation: Spoon approximately ½ teaspoon of your choice of fruit jam (raspberry, strawberry, or apricot) into the indentation of each cookie carefully so it doesn’t overflow when baking.
  5. Bake the Cookies: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies start to turn a light golden brown.
  6. Cool Completely: Remove the cookies from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes to set. Then transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool fully before serving to ensure they firm up nicely.
  7. Serve & Enjoy: Once cooled, serve these buttery, jam-filled cookies at your holiday gatherings or enjoy as a delightful everyday treat.

Notes

  • Use room temperature butter for easier creaming and better dough texture.
  • You can substitute any favorite jam flavor you prefer to customize the cookie taste.
  • Do not overbake; cookies should be slightly soft when removing from the oven and will firm up as they cool.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • For a festive look, dust with powdered sugar once cooled.
