Grandma’s Goulash is a hearty and comforting classic American dish featuring ground beef simmered with onions, garlic, and a rich tomato broth, combined with tender macaroni noodles. Perfect for a family dinner, this one-pot meal is flavorful, easy to prepare, and garnished with fresh green onions for a pop of color and taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup sweet onions, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Seasonings and Sauces

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp celery salt
  • 1 ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Dash of pepper

Liquids

  • 2 ½ cups tomato juice
  • 2 cups water

Other

  • 2 beef bouillon cubes
  • 2 cups macaroni noodles, uncooked
  • Green onions, sliced (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: Add ground beef, onions, garlic, and salt to a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring often, until the beef is browned and the onions are translucent.
  2. Dissolve Bouillon: Add beef bouillon cubes to the water and stir until fully dissolved. Pour this broth into the skillet with the browned beef and stir well.
  3. Add Tomato Base and Seasonings: Stir in tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, celery salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil to combine flavors thoroughly.
  4. Simmer: Reduce heat to medium-low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  5. Cook Macaroni: Add the uncooked macaroni noodles to the skillet. Cover and simmer on medium-low for another 20 minutes or until noodles are tender. Stir frequently to keep noodles from sticking to the bottom.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat, garnish with sliced green onions if desired, and serve this hearty goulash hot for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • Stirring the macaroni frequently while cooking helps prevent it from sticking and burning.
  • For a spicier version, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes.
  • Using low-sodium beef bouillon cubes can help control the saltiness of the dish.
  • Green onions add a fresh finish but can be omitted or substituted with parsley if preferred.
  • This recipe can be doubled to serve a larger family or for leftovers.
