A delicious and satisfying Turkey Apple Cheddar Sandwich featuring smoky deli turkey, sharp cheddar, crisp Fuji apple slices, tangy pickled onions, creamy avocado, and crunchy coleslaw, all layered between hearty whole grain bread and seasoned with flavorful Dijon mustard and everything seasoning.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread and Spreads

  • 2 slices hearty whole grain bread (I love Dave’s seeded varieties)
  • 12 tsp country Dijon mustard (or Carolina mustard BBQ sauce)
  • 1/21 oz ripe avocado

Meat and Cheese

  • 2 oz deli sliced smoked turkey
  • 1/21 oz sliced sharp white cheddar

Produce and Toppings

  • 1/41/3 Fuji apple, thinly sliced
  • Sliced pickled red onion (about 2-3 tablespoons)
  • 23 Tbsp prepared coleslaw (or substitute baby greens)

Seasonings

  • Sprinkle everything seasoning (or substitute all-purpose seasoning such as Hawaiian rub with garlic and paprika)
  • Ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread and spreads: Spread 1-2 teaspoons of country Dijon mustard evenly on one slice of the whole grain bread. On the other slice, gently smash the ripe avocado until smooth, spreading it evenly across the surface.
  2. Season the bread: Sprinkle everything seasoning and freshly ground black pepper on top of both the mustard-coated slice and the avocado-coated slice to add layers of flavor.
  3. Layer the sandwich fillings: On the mustard-coated bread slice, layer the deli sliced smoked turkey evenly. Next, add the sliced sharp white cheddar cheese on top of the turkey, followed by thinly sliced Fuji apple pieces for a sweet crunch.
  4. Add pickled onion and slaw: Layer sliced pickled red onion over the apple slices, then top with 2 to 3 tablespoons of prepared coleslaw or substitute with fresh baby greens for a crisp texture and tangy flavor.
  5. Assemble the sandwich: Place the avocado-coated bread slice on top of the layered ingredients, avocado side down, gently pressing to secure the sandwich layers.
  6. Serve: Slice the sandwich cleanly in half with a sharp knife and enjoy immediately for the best combination of flavors and textures.

Notes

  • You can substitute the Dijon mustard with Carolina mustard BBQ sauce for a tangier, smoky flavor.
  • If you prefer a lighter option, replace the coleslaw with fresh baby greens or spinach.
  • Adjust the amount of avocado and cheese according to your taste preferences.
  • For extra crunch, consider adding toasted nuts or seeds to the coleslaw.
  • To make it gluten-free, use gluten-free bread varieties.
